What is your favorite NON FRANCHISE film of all-time?

No Potter. No LOTR. Just a single, standalone film that is your favorite of all time.

I just watched mine today for the 3rd time in my life.

Gladiator

Mother fucker, the first time I saw it in school I was indifferent, perhaps because I didn't pay 100% attention. The second time I loved It.

This time, something hit me, enough to make this thread. Move over Saving Private Ryan, bow to your new king (in, you know, my opinion)

UUUHHHHhhhhhh goddddd damn most of my favorite films are from franchises, whether good or bad. Like the original Halloween, I consider it a standalone film BUT that's too bad because there have been like 10 sequels, a remake, and a sequel to the remake.

SO I'm going to have to GO... WITH......................

    The Land Before Time.

    LOL, jk

    Gladiator.

Kill Bill is also high up on my list.

I ALMOST said this but I didn't know if there'd be a dispute about it being split into two volumes.

I first saw this movie when I was about 7, and it made me feel very bad, mainly because I had seen Josh from Drake & Josh die :P

I have seen Vertigo, but I haven't seen Rope. What's it about?
Two young men strangle their "inferior" classmate, hide his body in their apartment, and invite his friends and family to a dinner party as a means to challenge the "perfection" of their crime.

Damn I wished I wouldn't have fallen asleep right after posting lol that's gotta be the coolest same time post in history.

He's right if you really get into the story V for Vendetta will completely alter the way you feel about many things.

So Crucify the ego, before it's far too late, to leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical. And you will come to find that we are all one mind, capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.

Not me. I'd rather live in a fascist society than implement anarchy.

    Water for Elephants.
I loved it too, but I wouldn't put it on any "all-time" favourite lists because it wasn't memorable or original enough.

Certainly groundbreaking, but it was more or less filmed theater. Vertigo has more depth and nuance to it, I think.

That was no more Anarchic than when The Sith was finally eradicated in RotJ. I mean who ruled that part of the galaxy after Luke succeeded? It was in the resistance's hands to recreate it anew. Same as V for Vendetta. The people disagreed and now they have the future to shape. Also applies to hundreds of other similar stories- we can't live in a world where ideas are suppressed and people's opinion means nothing.

They blew up their government, Parliament. The entire symbol of V is anarchy. I'd rather stay in that society than be a part of a violent uprising with mass death. Besides, the odds are high that the new government would be the same, just like those uprisings in the Middle East.

Ps. The author himself is an anarchist, and that is reflected in his writing.

Choice quotes: "So I decided to use this to political effect by coming up with a projected Fascist state in the near future and setting an anarchist against that. "

"I mean, yes, politically I'm an anarchist; "

He may be an anarchist but there will always be rule- therefore his story whether he likes it or not shaped the way for new and different rule. Anarchy is impossible.

Theres a way to grasp revolution without anarchy, but the human stigma will always leave a battle between a good and an evil. The circumstances change but generation through generation the right to individuality remains with the subversion that greatness is achieved through hard work and the path to the dark side is achieved easily.

In essence since Anarchy is impossible by inducing anarchy you at least get the catalyst to change so it is unthinkable to live in a state of total anarchy but everyone has a self conceived form of rules whether they believe in a higher power or not.

If I wasn't a devout Christian then who would I answer to? Who would dictate what I believe to be right or wrong? Who would have the right to tell me what is 'correct' or what is accepted?

Point is I do have very very strong beliefs and it is that love that guards from being seduced by the dark side and even I go that route it is that love that forgives. Most democratic nations have established their rules based on compassion and love with watered down justice and that saves my life being a middle class american. However that doesn't mean that I would let a mere human tell me what to think or do... Unless I was working behind the scenes on him. The hippies had it all wrong. Open rebellion in the US wasn't the answer. They should have smartly gathered in secret and stayed off the drugs and brought the government down from within.

People are too quick to panic, they are so used to the established order. People have lost the ability to set out on their own anymore. If hundreds of people die everyone goes crazy wanting answers whether they are good for them or not. They don't know how to isolate problems correctly. They over generalize and induce uncommon rule which is good for nobody. The American ideal has left the intellectual hard to come by.

That's why I love this forum. It's a gathering of people who do not care that it's cool not to read or that online forums are stupid. Nobody cares what others think so therefore we can all think and argue and let loose whether we know what we are talking about or not. Reason being is that we are all thinking and sharing ideas, something the government will some day try to diminish.

In V for Vendetta though in that universe, has a corrupt government which tried medical experiments and hurt and murdered their own people. Civilians were oblivious at what happened at Larkhill to innocent individuals and V only committed such a crime for the victims and for the people of the nation. The imagery used of the party in power and especially of Sutler who is viewed in an almost Hitler-esque way with symbols and colors and various propaganda. "Strength Through Unity, Unity through Faith." Yes V is a character that is an anarchist, but in the story of V for Vendetta it is justified for what the government did to it's people.

I've never seen the movie, but REALLY?!?!?

Adam Sutler? A person relatable to Adolf Hitler?

Someone's imagination came short when it came to character names :p
